University research support package ‘doesn’t go far enough’

Russell Group bemoans Sure package being ‘one-time only’, while charities say it’s smaller than anticipated

The government’s new package to support university research through the Covid crisis could be worth less than hoped for, and its one-off nature means it won’t alleviate the longer-term impacts, sector leaders have said.

The package, Sustaining University Research Expertise (Sure), announced on 6 November, is designed to offset up to 80 per cent of the losses from international student fees, which normally cross-subsidise research.
