Russell Group outlines R&D needs ahead of budget

Research-intensive universities call for ‘sustainable’ and ‘significant’ funding increase, and for additional Horizon Europe investment

The Russell Group of research-intensive universities has called for a “significant” boost in quality-related research funding and a “sustainable” increase in the level of full economic costs recovered on grants ahead of the government’s spring budget.

In its submission to the government, published on 22 January, the group said it welcomed the increase in R&D spending announced at the one-year spending review in November 2020 “particularly in light of challenging public finances”.
