Universities to struggle to fill R&D funding gap left by ODA cuts

     

Government accused of “cutting into the bone” of R&D system and not “walking the walk”

The president of vice-chancellors’ group Universities UK has said institutions will do “everything we possibly can” to make up for the aid-funding shortfall for research but are restricted by Covid-related financial pressures.

Julia Buckingham was speaking at a Science Media Centre briefing on 30 March, following recent news that the national research funder UK Research and Innovation was facing a £120 million shortfall for its 2021-22 allocations of Official Development Assistance.
