Data show overall income increased in 2019-20 despite pandemic, though R&D earnings were down

Universities’ overall income grew in the 2019-20 academic year despite being hit by the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, data published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency show.

Figures released by Hesa on 30 June revealed that for institutions whose financial year matches the academic year, total income reached £40.8 billion in 2019-20 compared with £40.4bn in 2018-19.
