Sunak pledges to stop China ‘infiltrating our universities’

Conservative leadership candidate says he would tackle Chinese influence “on day one”

Former chancellor Rishi Sunak has promised to “stop China taking over our universities” if he becomes the UK’s next prime minister.

Sunak said on 25 July that he would review all UK-Chinese research partnerships that “unwittingly assist” China’s ambitions to become a leader in new technologies, especially those with military applications, as he accused China of “stealing our technology and infiltrating our universities”.
