Rise in academic staff employed on teaching-only contracts

Surge in number of staff with no research responsibility seen in REF year

The proportion of staff on teaching-only contracts in universities has risen again, as the proportion of academics with responsibility for research continues to fall.

In 2021-22, UK universities had 233,930 academic staff, of whom 81,020, or 35 per cent, were employed on teaching-only contracts. This is up from 26 per cent in 2015-16.
