Proportion of students repaying loans in full set to soar

Department for Education modelling suggests big rise in proportion of students repaying entire debt

The proportion of full-time undergraduates expected to repay their student loan in full has leapt from 27 per cent among those who started in 2022 to 61 per cent of those starting this September, the government has said.

Students beginning in September will access the new ‘Plan 5’ loans, which have less lenient repayment terms than loans taken under the old ‘Plan 2’ system. Under reforms announced in February 2022, the earnings threshold at which they begin repaying loans will be reduced from £27,295 to £25,000, while the loan repayment term will be extended from 30 to 40 years.
