Clare Marchant says grading and demographic changes mean race for places is “slightly more competitive”

Students collecting their A-level results this week have been urged to prepare a ‘plan B’ amid concerns of fierce competition for university places.

The number of students awarded A and A* grades is expected to drop this year as results return to pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, an increase in the population of 18-year-olds means there is a higher demand for university places.
