Universities filling £5bn research funding black hole

Russell Group analysis also shows teaching funding shortfall

UK universities spent £5 billion to subsidise the cost of their research in 2021-22—an increase of more than £2bn in the last seven years, a Russell Group analysis has shown.

According to the group, UK universities received an average of 76 per cent of the full cost of research from funders in 2014-15, but this dropped to just 69 per cent last year.
