Public sees ‘something fishy’ in international recruitment

Attitudes towards overseas students have shifted, conference hears

The next government will have to address growing concern among the public about student immigration, and a perception that there is “something fishy” about international recruitment, a conference has heard.

Speaking at the 2024 Higher Education Policy Institute annual conference in London, Rob Ford, professor of political science at the University of Manchester, said that the reputation of universities had been hammered by “bad faith actors” in the debate over recruitment, and that there was work to be done to turn perceptions around.
