How a crisis in higher education funding is hitting those working in UK universities

UK higher education is in the middle of a job cuts crisis. According to one union branch’s tally, more than 60 universities in the UK are currently operating redundancy schemes or restructuring their workforce in a bid to save money, with entire academic departments and courses at risk of closure. Some have already closed down; others are fighting for their lives. But how did the higher education sector get to this point?

The Queen Mary University of London branch of the University and College Union (UCU) has been keeping a running tally of institutions making cuts. It currently lists 61 institutions, or roughly 40 per cent of all UK universities.
