Former business secretary aiming to become first Labour peer in role

Former business secretary Peter Mandelson has confirmed he will stand as a candidate for University of Oxford chancellor following a campaign by students to encourage the Labour peer to run.

On 21 August, Oxford student newspaper Cherwell announced that Mandelson will officially join the race to become the institution’s next chancellor. The position is traditionally held by a member of the House of Lords, but a Labour peer has never previously taken the role.
