John Cater calls for clarity from ministers as 30-year spell leading Edge Hill nears close

The outgoing Edge Hill University vice-chancellor—the longest-serving university leader in the UK—has urged the Labour government to allow English universities small tuition fee rises or inflation-linked increases, to end what he sees as chronic financial uncertainty making planning impossible for universities.

John Cater was speaking to Research Professional News after announcing this week that he will retire as Edge Hill vice-chancellor in January, having led the Ormskirk-based institution since 1993.
