Risk to academics from alleged violations of US export law

The name of John Reece Roth, former professor at the University of Tennessee, may not spring readily to mind. But it should; lest you go where he is going.

Last month Roth went to the US Supreme Court in his efforts to overturn his conviction for violation of the Arms Export Control Act. The court refused his writ of certiorari. He is now almost certainly at the end of the road. At 72, he faces the 48 months in federal prison he was sentenced to in 2008, but had yet to serve pending appeals.
