With four more universities joining the Russell Group, John Bonner assesses the options for the jilted 1994 Group of smaller research-intensive universities.

“What does the Russell Group have in common with the Mafia?” says a joke doing the rounds. When they make you an offer, don’t refuse and don’t ask questions.

And so when the all-powerful Russell Group issued membership invitations to the universities of Durham, Exeter, York and Queen Mary University of London, there was no question about which way they would walk.
