The missing piece in the innovation jigsaw

Despite the Technology Strategy Board’s catapults, there’s still a gap between university research and industry. Fraunhofer centres can fill it, says Tim Holt.

In his recent review of university-industry collaborations, Andrew Witty highlighted the potential of universities to enhance economic growth, and set out plans for large-scale “arrow projects” to make globally competitive technological ideas into real businesses.

But to realise this dream, we need to take a serious look at the innovation mix in the UK. In particular, there is a gap between industry-led programmes such as the Technology Strategy Board’s Catapult centres and university research.
