Science campaign must inspire voters as well as ministers

As the Campaign for Science and Engineering marks its 30th birthday, increased political impact depends on reaching a broader audience, says Sarah Main.

This month sees the 30th birthday of the Campaign for Science and Engineering. Rejoining the CaSE team after a year immersed in play groups, school gates and building work, the anniversary has given me an opportunity to look with fresh eyes at the place of science and engineering in the nation’s affections.

On 13 January 1986, an extraordinary advertisement appeared in The Times calling on the public to “Ask your MP to help save British science before it is too late.”
