Who’d have thought that less than six months after voting to leave the European Union, Britain would be announcing an industrial strategy, the kind of thing usually associated with our European neighbours?

November’s autumn statement saw the government commit £23 billion to a package to boost UK productivity, including an extra £4.7bn between now and 2020 for science and innovation.
