Gathering evidence for the REF of the effect of artistic projects on peoples’ lives is not easy, but it can be done, says Lesley Brook.

Suppose I walk into an exhibition, look at the paintings, and walk out again. How can the gallery, the researchers who worked on the show and their institution find out what difference the exhibition made to my life?

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) showed that measuring the impact of art research is expected and possible. To understand how the impact of art research could be measured, I turned to the REF impact case studies to glean insights.
