David Sweeney is just what the doctor ordered
It came as no surprise when David Sweeney, director of research and innovation at the Higher Education Funding Council for England, was appointed as the first executive chairman of Research England, the funding body being created out of the embers of HEFCE.
We had kept our counsel until the announcement was made, not entirely sure about the intentions of Jo Johnson, the universities and science minister, and John Kingman, interim chairman of UK Research and Innovation. Furthermore, there were no leaks: the news was kept behind a ring of steel until the day of release.
