Wales needs research funds—and a voice in national policy—to match its size, and a clear message on innovation, says Graeme Reid.
Innovation and research in Wales are under stress from external events. The creation of UK Research and Innovation comes with an unprecedented 30 per cent increase in UK research funding. Lots of UKRI money is available, but none is earmarked for Wales; it must be won in competition.
Brexit, however, will remove some £65 million a year of EU funding for research and innovation in Wales, largely structural funds. Replacement funding from the UK is still under discussion, and the Welsh government, like other governments, is strapped for cash.
