On 9 October, the Department for Education sent a letter to vice-chancellors on behalf of education secretary Gavin Williamson. The missive threatened to defund universities that did not adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. “If I have not seen the overwhelming majority of institutions adopting the definition by Christmas then I will act,” Williamson thundered.
