Review aims to future-proof social science PhDs

Grand challenges and international competition mean doctoral training needs a rethink, says Kathy Rastle

On 29 May, the Economic and Social Research Council launched a wide-ranging review into the future of the PhD in the social sciences in the UK.

The review aims to ensure that the ESRC’s social science doctoral training is world-leading and fit to address the challenges of the future. Its steering group, which I chair, includes students, academics, and representatives from the public sector and industry.
