The road to R&D success needs to be a quality street
On the face of it, Research England gave universities much to celebrate last week. The headline-grabbing statement in recurrent budgets published by the funder was that there would be “an increase in funding to English universities’ research and knowledge exchange activity of 3.5 per cent for 2021-22”.
Any funding rise is obviously welcome. But follow the money, as journalists are always urged to do, and things get complicated fast.
