The government’s attitude to research risks exacerbating problems

“Dangerous”, “disconnected”, “unethical”. The verdicts of scientists opposed to the ending of Covid-19 restrictions, confirmed by the government this week, could just as well be applied to the way ministers are approaching scientific advice as to the changes themselves.

The decision to press ahead with an end to legal restrictions—including mask wearing and social distancing—on 19 July, despite daily cases in the UK climbing to more than 34,000 in the past week, has reignited controversy over the relationship between those in power and their scientific advisers.
