After three prime ministers, five education secretaries and a tug of war over who the true science minister is, even the most ardent research policy-watchers could be forgiven for hoping to enjoy their end-of-year departmental beverages in a numb sort of peace.
But not this year, as the team leading the reform of research assessment in the UK published three major reports on 12 December for the sector to chew over with the festive fare.
