US pulls funding from Unesco

The US has withdrawn three-quarters of its annual funding for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, following the UN body’s vote to recognise Palestine as a full member.

The US is the largest single contributor to Unesco. Its contribution, which was to be $80m this year, represents over one-fifth of the organisation’s budget. President Ronald Reagan withdrew US membership of Unesco in 1984, but President George W Bush took the country back into the organisation in 2003.
