The announcement of a US$6 billion campaign by the University of Southern California (USC), a record in higher education, follows several others that may signal a return to fundraising levels not seen since before the economic downturn in 2008.
While 2008 saw record fundraising levels, giving fell 12 per cent in 2009 and grew only weakly the following year. A survey of fundraising officials by the Council for Advancement of Support of Education (CASE) found they expect more than 5 per cent growth in giving in the upcoming school year.
