US students trail East Asian counterparts in science and maths

American fourth and eighth grade students are being outperformed by their counterparts in East Asian countries and some European nations in science and mathematics, according to the Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics.

The figures from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study survey for 2011 were released on 11 December.
