Scientists fight ‘devastating’ 2013 cuts

The American Association for the Advancement of Science and more than 3,000 other organisations are warning Congress and President Obama that automatic budget cuts set for January could have “devastating” effects on essential programmes like research.

They are concerned about the looming sequestration, which refers to cuts triggered by the November 2011 failure of the congressional “supercommittee” to reach an agreement on how to reduce the federal debt by $1.2 trillion (€97 billion). Missing that deadline, which was set in last year’s Budget Control Act, automatically triggered large across-the-board cuts over nine years beginning in January 2013.
