A Californian open-access deal could herald the sunny future that reformers have been dreaming about

Academic publishing was for the longest time a rather staid and slow-moving business. Things are changing fast these days, though.

Take the recent news that the University of California (UC) system is expanding its open-access agreement with publishing big fish Springer Nature to include Nature, the company’s eponymous and most prestigious journal.
