US spending is up and missions are in—but geopolitical tensions are a brake on research

Debates over president Joe Biden’s budget proposals for research are well underway.

Since the plans were published earlier this month, policy experts have fretted over whether enough money is going to the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, whether more should go to the Cancer Moonshot to improve health or Nasa for actual moonshots, and a plethora of other points of federal funding detail.
