Attempt to resurrect OTA fails

An amendment to the fiscal year (FY) 2012 appropriations bill that would have provided $2.5 million to re-establish the congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), failed by a vote of 176-235.

The office was set up in 1972 and was charged with providing lawmakers with objective and expert analysis of scientific and technical issues before funding was withdrawn by Congress in 1995.
