The House Science, Space and Technology Committee is questioning the Obama administration’s plans to eliminate or merge 116 different STEM programs, cutting the total number by about half.
“Our country continues to face a fiscal crisis and part of our challenge is how to achieve the most benefit from our limited resources in the current budget environment. But we also need to carefully consider how best to streamline, coordinate and consolidate programs that specifically engage children and the public in STEM subjects,” said committee chairman Representative Lamar Smith, a Republican from Texas.
The administration’s fiscal year 2014 budget request includes $3.1 billion for STEM education programs, nearly 7 percent more than was allocated in FY2012.
