Appropriations subcommittee hopes to fund NIH request

During a hearing with National Institutes of Health director Francis Collins, leaders of the House subcommittee that sets the agency’s budget said they wanted to give it as big a budget as they could, while Collins spoke at length about his hopes for a proposed Precision Medicine Initiative.

President Barack Obama’s fiscal year 2016 budget includes a $1 billion increase for the NIH, a 3.3 percent rise that would bring its total funding to $31.3bn.

Collins answered questions from members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies and the chairman and ranking member of the full Appropriations committee. He was joined by several directors of NIH institutes, including Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Jon Lorsch of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
