New obstacle for FDA nominee

The confirmation of Robert Califf as Food and Drug Administration commissioner has been delayed again, this time over the FDA's approach to the approval and prescription of painkillers.

Senator Edward Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts, said he would prevent a vote on Califf until the FDA reforms its rules about approving and prescribing some opioid painkillers such as OxyContin.

Markey wants the agency to take abuse and addiction into account when deciding on the safety of opioid drugs and to rescind its approval of OxyContin for children.
