A House committee has used a meeting with officials from the agencies that operate America’s weather satellites to question their collaboration with each other, and raise the idea of privatization.
Members of the House science committee’s environment subcommittee held a hearing with representatives from the Department of Defense and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Republicans such as committee chairman Lamar Smith, Republican of Texas, have been critical for years of NOAA’s program. “Congress should not continue to fund an over-budget program that has not performed up to standards. So what is NOAA doing differently with its next series of satellites that justifies such high continued funding? I fear the answer is nothing,” Smith said at the hearing.
