DOE may be illegally halting research payments

The Department of Energy has stopped payments to at least four energy research programs, a move the top Democrat on the House science committee has said might be illegal.

Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson (above), Democrat of Texas, accused the DOE of not processing grant payments for four programs run by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, and she’s now asking a government watchdog to look into it.

ARPA-E is a high-risk, high-reward R&D funder focused on energy technology. Congress created the agency in 2007, and it has largely had bipartisan support since then.
