Some lawmakers want NIH head Collins to go

Forty-one Republican representatives are asking president Donald Trump to fire National Institutes of Health director Francis Collins because of his support for stem cell and cloning research.

Collins (above) is one of the rare holdovers from former president Barack Obama’s administration. President Trump has not said why he asked Collins to stay on when he has been unusually thorough in purging other Obama appointees. Collins is generally well regarded and enjoys broad backing from Congress.

In some corners, however, it appears the knives are out. Congressman Jim Banks, Republican of Indiana, wrote a letter to president Trump expressing what he says are ethical concerns about Collins’s positions.
