Moves to beef up scrutiny of Covid-19 response follow alarm over allegations of political meddling
Leading Democrats have tabled legislation that would bring about heightened scrutiny of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) during the Covid-19 pandemic, amid a spate of rows over alleged political interference at scientific agencies overseen by the department.
The bill, introduced by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and senator Patty Murray (pictured) on 22 September, would create a taskforce charged with conducting investigations into alleged political interference at agencies in relation to the US government’s pandemic response. The taskforce would have powers to release any information from its investigations deemed to be in the public interest.
