South Pole research station manager finally rescued

Renee-Nicole Douceur, an engineer and site manager at the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, was rescued and taken to a hospital in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 17 October.

The long-awaited rescue, which was complex and dangerous because of weather conditions, became necessary after Douceur apparently suffered a stroke in August.
