NASA launches Earth-observing satellite

NASA launched its newest Earth-observing satellite—the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project (NPP)—into space on 28 October aboard a Delta II rocket.

The agency reported that NPP successfully separated from the Delta II less than an hour after launch, and the first signal was then detected.
