$416m boost for gene sequencing programme

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has broadened its gene sequencing programme with a four-year, $416 million plan that focuses on inherited diseases and medical applications, the National Institutes of Health component announced on 6 December.

The funding will begin in fiscal year 2012, and the lion’s share—initially $86m a year—will go to the large genome sequencing centres at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri; and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
