NIH adopts updated animal protection rules

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will soon adopt the eighth edition of its Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, which establishes the agency’s policies on the humane use of animals in the research that it funds, according to a 1 December announcement.

Effective January 1, 2012, institutions receiving funds from NIH and other public health service agencies to support animal activities must base their animal care and use programmes on this new edition of the Guide.
