NIH temporarily bans chimp research

The National Institutes of Health is to curtail chimpanzee research and has announced that it will issue no awards for work involving the primates until it has new rules in place.

The decision follows a report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), commissioned by the NIH, to assess whether chimpanzees are or will be necessary for biomedical and behavioural research.
