More research urged on oil spill prevention and response

The US Arctic Research Commission is calling for more funding for research into preventing and responding to oil spills in the far north, especially from federal sources.

The commission is an independent federal agency that advises the President and Congress. In a report issued on 13 November, it identified a “significant shortcoming” in the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s support for research in this area.
