While the average age of new investigators funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has remained relatively constant over the past decade, this is not the case when it comes to the entire pool of principal investigators (PIs).
Less than 1 per cent of PIs were over age 65 in 1980, but now PIs over 65 comprise nearly 7 per cent of the total, according to the director of NIH’s Office of Extramural Research, Sally Rockey.
