Axing of telescopes recommended as astronomy faces lean time

Five US telescope and astronomical facilities could be closed if the National Science Foundation (NSF) accepts the recommendations of an advisory panel on coping with a depressing budget outlook for the agency's ground-based astronomy programme.

The 17-member Portfolio Review Committee released its report, ‘Advancing Astronomy in the Coming Decade: Opportunities and Challenges’, on 14 August.
