Health tops companies’ R&D spending

Private research and development funding in the US is focused most towards health and medical applications, according to a National Science Foundation (NSF) report.

The 22 August report shows that of the $290.7 billion spent by businesses on R&D in 2008 in the US, $76.1bn (26 per cent) was in the health and medical areas, with over 86 per cent paid for by the companies themselves.
