EPA fills top scientific integrity post

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has appointed as its scientific integrity official a senior scientist from the not-for-profit science advocacy group the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the agency announced on 25 November.

In her new role, Francesca Grifo will be charged with coordinating and carrying out the agency’s scientific integrity policy and chairing the EPA’s standing scientific integrity committee.

“Science is, and continues to be, the backbone of this agency and the integrity of our science is central to the identity and credibility of our work,” said EPA administrator Gina McCarthy in announcing the appointment. She said Grifo brings “a wealth of experience and knowledge to the EPA” that will help the agency to implement its scientific integrity policy.
